A reported gas pipeline explosion in Aleto, Eleme LGA, Rivers State, has left at least 20 people injured and damaged dozens of houses. YEAC-Nigeria is calling for a joint investigation into the incident.
A gas pipeline explosion in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, has reportedly injured at least 20 people and damaged or destroyed about 50 houses, raising renewed concerns about pipeline safety and emergency response in the Niger Delta.
The explosion occurred on Thursday evening, October 15, 2026, along Old Bori Road in Aleto. Several victims were reportedly taken to hospitals for treatment, while nearby buildings, shops, a mechanic workshop and vehicles were also affected.
The full extent of the damage, the condition of the victims and the precise cause of the explosion require confirmation by the relevant authorities.
Pipeline Rupture Reportedly Linked to Explosion
Initial media reports linked the incident to a ruptured pipeline said to belong to the Nigeria Gas Company. However, the cause has not been independently established, and the circumstances surrounding the rupture remain subject to investigation.
A resident quoted in media reports alleged that the pipeline had been leaking for about three weeks before the explosion. The allegation raises questions about whether the leak was reported to the operator and what steps, if any, were taken before the incident.
Daniel Chuma, Leader of the Eleme Legislative Council, said he had previously written to the company and petitioned relevant authorities over pipeline leakage concerns.
According to reports, the council also approached the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, with the police copied, requesting urgent intervention and a joint investigation.
The allegations have yet to be established through an official investigation. The operator and relevant authorities should be given the opportunity to clarify the reports and provide details of any earlier complaints and responses.
YEAC-Nigeria Calls for Independent Investigation
The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), an organisation monitoring environmental issues in the Niger Delta, confirmed the incident.
Its Executive Director, Dr Fyneface Dumnamene, said volunteers from the organisation visited the scene to independently verify the situation.
YEAC-Nigeria called on NOSDRA to identify the operator of the affected facility and conduct a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The organisation also urged the agency to apply relevant provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, where applicable.
A joint investigation would help establish the cause of the explosion, determine the extent of the damage and clarify the responsibilities of the relevant parties.
NSCDC Monitors Scene as Residents Seek Assistance
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was reported to be at the scene monitoring the situation and participating in rescue efforts. Community members were also reported to have restricted access to the affected area to reduce the risk of further injuries.
The incident has heightened concerns about the safety of residents living and working near gas infrastructure, particularly where reports of earlier leakage emerge.
Beyond emergency response, affected residents may require medical assistance, temporary shelter and support for damaged homes and businesses. The scale of any such needs will depend on assessments by emergency responders and the relevant authorities.
Questions Over Pipeline Safety and Accountability
The Aleto explosion has renewed attention on pipeline monitoring, reporting of suspected leaks and coordination among operators, regulators and host communities.
An independent investigation is needed to determine the cause of the rupture, verify whether warnings were received before the explosion and establish whether applicable safety requirements were met.
Until those findings are available, allegations concerning prior notice, equipment failure or responsibility for the incident should remain attributed rather than treated as established facts.
For residents of Aleto, the immediate priorities are the safety of the affected area, medical care for the injured, assistance for impacted households and a transparent investigation into what happened.
