2027 Political Realignments: Atiku’s One-Term Proposal And The Quest For Opposition Unity

Published:

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the political landscape is witnessing significant shifts. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is reportedly proposing a one-term presidency, with Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, as his running mate. This strategy aims to consolidate opposition forces to challenge the incumbent, President Bola Tinubu, and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Atiku has confirmed the formation of a coalition with Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and other political figures, signaling a concerted effort to unseat President Tinubu in the upcoming election. This alliance seeks to combine Atiku’s influence in the North with Obi’s appeal in the South-East, creating a formidable opposition bloc.

Central to the coalition’s strategy is Atiku’s proposal to serve a single term if elected, subsequently supporting Obi for the presidency in 2031. This arrangement is designed to address regional power-sharing concerns and to present a united front against the APC. However, discussions are ongoing, and no formal agreement has been reached.

Despite the coalition’s intentions, there is notable resistance within opposition ranks. Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, has criticized Atiku’s proposal, viewing it as an attempt to marginalize the South-East by positioning Obi in a subordinate role. They argue that the presidency should rotate to the South following President Buhari’s eight-year term, emphasizing the need for equitable representation.

The proposed alliance faces additional hurdles, including internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP). These internal divisions complicate efforts to present a cohesive opposition front. Moreover, some stakeholders express skepticism about Atiku’s commitment to power-sharing, citing his previous political maneuvers as indicative of an overarching ambition.

As the 2027 elections draw nearer, the success of this proposed coalition hinges on its ability to navigate internal disagreements, address regional concerns, and present a unified platform. The political landscape remains fluid, and the coming months will be critical in determining whether this alliance can effectively challenge the incumbent administration.
