LAGOS, August 12, 2026 — The Working People United (WoPU) has formally inaugurated its Lagos State Chapter, strengthening its grassroots structure and reaffirming its commitment to mobilising workers and other members of the working class for greater participation in governance and public affairs.
The inauguration ceremony, held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the Blue Roof, Lagos Television (LTV), Lagos, was led by the National Coordinator-General of WoPU, Comrade (Prince) Williams Eniredonana Akporeha.
Addressing members and stakeholders at the event, Akporeha described Lagos as a strategic addition to the movement’s national grassroots network, noting that the state remains a major economic hub with millions of workers, artisans, traders, transporters, professionals, entrepreneurs and young people contributing daily to Nigeria’s development.
He said the inauguration represented a significant milestone in WoPU’s efforts to create a stronger platform through which working people can participate meaningfully in civic and political affairs.

WoPU: Giving Working People a Stronger Voice
According to the National Coordinator-General, WoPU was established as a civic and political platform designed to amplify the voice of working people while encouraging responsible citizenship, policy advocacy and support for leaders considered capable of delivering good governance.
“We are here for two reasons: to advocate good policies and to support good politics. Working people should not only demand accountability but also identify and support leaders who have and can deliver good governance,” Akporeha said.
He explained that WoPU’s constituency cuts across both the formal and informal sectors, encompassing professionals, artisans, traders, farmers, drivers, entrepreneurs, workers and young Nigerians.

Lagos Chapter Sets Out Grassroots Agenda
The newly inaugurated Lagos chapter is expected to focus on expanding WoPU’s grassroots presence across the state’s local government areas, wards and communities.
Akporeha outlined several priorities for the Lagos chapter, including the mobilisation of working people, membership expansion, civic education, grassroots organisation and increased participation in the democratic process.
He said the organisation would also educate members and the wider public on government policies and reforms, while encouraging citizens to participate actively in elections and other democratic processes.
“We will unite working people across all sectors in Lagos, ensuring that every voice is heard and every concern is addressed. We are committed to building structures that reach every local government, ward and community,” he stated.
WoPU Backs Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid
The movement also formally announced its support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, citing what it described as positive developments under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Akporeha said WoPU had assessed the administration’s policies since its inauguration on May 29, 2023, and expressed the organisation’s belief that some of the reforms could contribute to improved economic opportunities and social development.
DASCENARIO reports that among the areas highlighted were the new national minimum wage framework, proposed periodic wage reviews, the Student Loan Scheme, support for small businesses and social investment programmes.
He called on members of WoPU to engage with communities and explain the movement’s position on the administration’s policies while encouraging citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
Support for Progressive Candidates in Lagos
At the state level, the organisation announced its intention to support candidates it considers progressive in the forthcoming elections, including Comrade Obafemi Hamzat, whom the speech identified as its preferred candidate for Lagos State.
Akporeha charged WoPU members to strengthen grassroots mobilisation ahead of the elections and urged them to participate peacefully and lawfully in the democratic process.
“Go to your wards, your polling units and your communities. Speak to your neighbours, colleagues and fellow workers. Mobilise responsibly and ensure that citizens understand the choices before them,” he told members.
He also encouraged members to exercise their constitutional rights and rejected any attempt to intimidate individuals over their choice of political association or affiliation.
Call for Unity and Responsible Citizenship
The WoPU leader emphasised that the movement’s activities would extend beyond electoral mobilisation, stressing the importance of responsible citizenship, policy awareness and constructive engagement with government.
He described the working people as a critical force in Nigeria’s economic and political development and urged members of the Lagos chapter to remain united and committed to the movement’s objectives.
“The working people of Lagos State have always been leaders in the struggle for a better Nigeria. Today, we add our voice to the movement for continuity, progress and the Renewed Hope Agenda. Let us unite, let us mobilise and let us build the Nigeria of our dreams,” Akporeha declared.
The inauguration marks the beginning of WoPU’s expanded grassroots operations in Lagos State, with the organisation expected to intensify membership mobilisation, civic engagement and community-level activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
