The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other Northern politicians to postpone their presidential ambitions until 2031. Akume shared this perspective during an interview on Channels Television, emphasizing the need for political balance and continuity in leadership.
According to Akume, the presidency should not return to the North until after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a Southerner, completes his second term, should he seek re-election and succeed. He urged Northern leaders to support the South in maintaining a fair rotation of power, which has been a cornerstone of Nigeria’s political stability.
“President Tinubu, as a Southerner, should be allowed to complete his second term. Those eyeing the presidency from the North in 2027 should consider waiting until 2031,” Akume stated.
Addressing Atiku Abubakar directly, Akume noted that leadership is ultimately determined by divine will, asserting, “If it is God’s will for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to become President of Nigeria, even at the age of 90, it will happen. However, he and other Northerners with presidential ambitions should look beyond 2027.”
This statement underscores Akume’s call for patience and cooperation among Northern politicians to uphold the principle of equitable power distribution in Nigeria.
