Controversial Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has once again stirred public debate after revealing the reasons behind his transition from Christian ministry to traditional worship.
It would be recalled that in 2023, Edochie announced his divine calling to preach the gospel and subsequently launched an online ministry alongside his partner, Judy Austin. The ministry, which initially garnered attention, was active for several months before fading out in early 2024, leading to speculation about his sudden silence on religious matters.
Edochie’s Revelation: “God Told Me to Return to My Roots”
Addressing the shift in a recent statement, Yul explained that his decision was based on what he described as a divine directive urging him to explore his ancestral roots and embrace the traditional religious practices of his forefathers.
“In 2023, I started my ministry. While preaching the word of God, I felt a vacuum. I felt there was more to it. I felt incomplete. Then God said to me, ‘Go home and know about your people. You cannot be preaching about the people of Israel, yet you know nothing about the people of Nteje. Go home and learn the traditional worship and ways of your people, for they’re approved by God. And when I came back home, I became complete,” Edochie declared.
His statement suggests that his journey into traditional African spirituality was not a mere personal decision but one he believes was ordained by a higher power.
Edochie’s declaration has sparked mixed reactions across social media, with some supporting his newfound spiritual path, while others questioned his authenticity and consistency.
One user, @agbot, sarcastically inquired:
“How does God’s voice sound when He speaks to you? I really want to know.”
Another netizen, @judy_obasiyul_autism1, suggested external influence:
“Today is a very beautiful day not to accuse God. Yul, please, you know very well that it wasn’t God who told you this—it was Judy. Put your hand on your chest and say ‘It is Judy who told me.’”
A more skeptical reaction came from @eblycious, who dismissed his claim entirely:
“Hmm, stop lying on top of God’s head, biko.”
Edochie has remained a polarizing figure in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, known for making dramatic life changes that often place him at the center of public scrutiny. From his controversial polygamous marriage to his self-declared prophetic calling, and now his embrace of traditional spirituality, the actor continues to attract intense public discourse.
As the debate rages on, many are curious to see how far Yul Edochie will go in his traditional spiritual journey and whether this latest transformation will be permanent or yet another phase in his ever-evolving public persona.
