A Trailblazer In Uniform: ASP Aminat Mayegun’s Historic Award Celebrates A New Face Of The Nigeria Police

Published:

In a moment that symbolized a shift towards recognition and modernity within the Nigeria Police Force, the National Media Community Awards 2025 became the stage for a historic celebration as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Aminat Mayegun was honored with the prestigious merit award for the “Most Resourceful Public Relations Officer of the Year.”

The ceremony was made all the more significant as the award was presented by none other than the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Adegoke Fayoade, who himself was named “Man of the Year,” in a powerful display of institutional pride and support for exemplary service.

AIG Fayoade, while presenting the award, personally commended ASP Mayegun for her exceptional professionalism and passion in the discharge of her duties, urging her to continue raising the bar for the Force.

The event, which also celebrated other distinguished Nigerians like Dr. Adaora Umeoji, GMD/CEO of Zenith Bank, and Dr. D.K. Olukoya of the MFM, found one of its most resonant stories in the ascent of this dedicated police officer.

ASP Aminat Mayegun is not just an award-winning PRO; she is a trailblazer. Currently serving as the Police Public Relations Officer for the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Ikoyi, she holds the distinct honor of being the first female officer to ever occupy this pivotal position.

In a role that serves as the critical bridge between the police and the public, her appointment and success signal a progressive evolution in the Force’s approach to communication and community engagement.

Her academic credentials—a Master’s degree in Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology, coupled with a Bachelor’s in Psychology—provide a formidable foundation for her role. This expertise is evident in her handling of the public narrative around some of the most sensitive and high-profile cases.

She has been the calm, authoritative voice explaining complex investigations into alleged police extortion, cyberstalking, and the forgery of police documents. Most notably, she managed the intense public and media scrutiny surrounding the alleged misappropriation of funds donated for the medical care of Nollywood icon, Mr. John Okafor (Mr. Ibu), demonstrating poise under pressure.

Colleagues describe her as “beautiful, professional, and intelligent,” but her public persona is defined by an unwavering commitment to the principles she frequently articulates: professionalism, accountability, and the fair delivery of justice.

Beyond her official duties, ASP Mayegun is a passionate advocate for women and a promoter of a reading culture.

During her interview with journalists after the historic award win, ASP Mayegun struck a characteristically humble and dedicated tone.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award in recognition of my hard work, dedication, and resilience as an astute officer,” she stated.

She then concluded with a remark that encapsulates her professional ethos:

“This recognition is a reminder that the reward for hard work is always more work. I remain committed to service, excellence, and the noble ideals of our profession.”

For the Nigeria Police Force and the public it serves, ASP Aminat Mayegun represents not just an award winner, but a promising beacon of a more transparent and communicative future.
