As Cross River State hosts the 2026 edition of African Sub-Sovereign Government Network (AFSNET) Conference in Calabar, prominent entrepreneur, James Alicha has emphasized the importance of early preparation, describing it as critical to the success of the event.
With less than a year to go before the conference kicks off in the state, Alicha urged stakeholders to prioritize readiness to ensure a successful gathering of sub-sovereign leaders from across Africa.
Speaking with journalists in Calabar, recently, he highlighted that early preparation was essential not only for logistical success but also to enable the state to maximize the economic and social benefits that the event promises to bring.
“We must begin our preparations now. This conference is not just an event; it is an opportunity for Cross River to showcase its potential on a continental stage. We cannot afford to wait until the last minute,” he stated.
Alicha who outlined the significant economic impact the AFSNET Conference could have on Cross River State, noted that the event is expected to attract a diverse range of participants, including government officials, business leaders, and policy experts. “The influx of visitors will create a surge in demand for local goods and services, benefiting our economy immensely,” he said, observing that from hospitality to transportation, every sector has the potential to thrive during this period.
Addressing the infrastructural requirements of the state, Alicha reiterated the need to upgrade facilities and services ahead of the conference. He stressed that improvements to roads, accommodation, and public amenities are paramount to ensure that Cross River meets international standards.
“Our goal should be targeted at presenting a Cross River that is not only ready to host but also capable of impressing our guests,” he said, adding that the state government should already commence discussions with local contractors and service providers to begin to initiate these upgrades.
Alicha who underscored the importance of aligning the conference with sustainable development goals, expressed his commitment to promoting initiatives that would focus on environmental sustainability and responsible governance during the event.
“Let us ensure that our preparations reflect our dedication to sustainable practices. This conference should not only benefit us today but also leave a positive legacy for future generations,” he remarked.
He also called for community involvement and support in the preparations for the AFSNET Conference, stating that “this is a collective effort that requires the participation of all stakeholders, including local businesses, community leaders, and residents” while encouraging citizens to embrace the upcoming event as an opportunity to showcase the rich culture and hospitality of Cross River.
Alicha restated that the call for early preparation resonates with the urgency and excitement surrounding this significant event, adding that “with a focus on economic opportunities, infrastructure readiness, community engagement, and sustainable development, Cross River State is poised to make a lasting impression on the African stage”.
“While a local organizing committee should immediately be constituted, stakeholders should rally round the governor, Senator Bassey Otu to ensure that the AFSNET Conference is a resounding success that will expectedly pave the way for future growth and development in the state”, he tendered.
