Benue Community Erupts in Violence: Monarch’s Palace, Local Government Secretariat, And Senator’s Hotel Torched Following Killings Of Security Guards

Published:

In a dramatic escalation of unrest, the town of Naka in Benue State witnessed widespread arson on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, as enraged youths set ablaze several significant structures. Targets included the palace of Ter Nagi, Chief Daniel Abomtse, the Gwer West Local Government Secretariat, and a hotel owned by Senator Titus Zam, representing Benue North West District. This upheaval was sparked by the alleged killing of three members of the Benue Civil Protection Guards by suspected armed herdsmen.

The violence erupted when the bodies of the slain security personnel were brought to Naka early Tuesday morning. Eyewitnesses reported that the sight of the corpses incited anger among the youths, leading them to protest against the persistent attacks and perceived inaction by authorities. The initially peaceful demonstration quickly escalated as hoodlums reportedly hijacked the protest, resulting in the widespread destruction of property.

Victor Omirin, Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Area, confirmed the incident, stating that the unrest was a direct response to the killings. He noted that while the protests began peacefully, they were soon overtaken by violent elements who targeted key infrastructures in the town.

Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned both the killings and the subsequent acts of arson. He expressed deep concern over the murder of the Civil Protection Guards, describing it as a blatant affront to community peace and security. The governor also appealed for restraint, urging residents not to resort to the destruction of property, which undermines governmental efforts to restore peace and order.

In response to the escalating violence, the Benue State Police Command deployed tactical teams to Naka to restore order. The Commissioner of Police personally led the intervention, aiming to prevent further destruction and maintain peace in the affected areas.

The incident has drawn national attention to the ongoing security challenges in Benue State, highlighting the urgent need for effective measures to protect communities from such violent outbreaks.
