As part of its intensified efforts to curb crime during the festive season, the Borno State Police Command has apprehended two suspects and recovered 25 stolen mobile phones in a targeted stop-and-search operation.
The arrests occurred on December 10, 2024, at approximately 1:50 PM, when officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) intercepted two young men during routine checks along Damboa Road in Maiduguri. The suspects, identified as Ibrahim Abubakar (18) and Ibrahim Mohammed, were found transporting the stolen phones concealed in their tricycle.
The operation, part of the Command’s proactive strategy to deter criminal activity, was carried out at key locations across the state, targeting areas identified as hotspots for petty theft and other crimes.
The State Commissioner of Police commended the officers involved for their vigilance and reiterated the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property throughout the holiday period.
“Such operations are essential to creating a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors during the festive season,” a police spokesperson noted.
During preliminary interrogation, the duo confessed to stealing the phones from unsuspecting individuals in several communities and villages located along the Borno-Adamawa State border, including Mubi Town, Tashan Alade, Miringa, Kwaya Kusar, and Biu Local Government Area.
The Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Mohammed Lawal, psc, confirmed that the suspects remain in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. He also reassured the public that efforts are being made to identify and return the recovered phones to their rightful owners.
Commissioner Lawal praised the vigilance of the officers involved in the operation and reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring public safety throughout the holiday period. He also urged residents to maintain a high level of alertness and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.
