A devastating aviation disaster unfolded on Christmas Day as an Azerbaijan Airlines flight carrying 105 passengers and crew crashed in Kazakhstan, erupting into a fireball upon impact. Initial reports indicate that only 28 people survived the tragic incident, with several in critical condition.
The ill-fated Embraer E190AR aircraft, registered as 4K-AZ65, was en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia. The flight encountered severe technical difficulties and issued a distress signal over the Caspian Sea at an altitude of 2,125 feet. The crew reported a bird strike that resulted in a critical steering failure, forcing the plane into a steep descent.
In a desperate attempt to land, the aircraft diverted to Aktau, a city in western Kazakhstan. Tragically, the plane crashed during the emergency landing, breaking apart and igniting a massive blaze that engulfed the wreckage in thick black smoke.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, battling flames and searching for survivors amid the wreckage. Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed survivors, with Health Minister Akmaral Alnazarova stating that at least six passengers are in critical condition. The flight had been rerouted from Grozny and Makhachkala due to heavy fog. Grozny, the intended destination, is the capital of Chechnya, a region often in the spotlight for its involvement in Russian military operations linked to the war in Ukraine.
Kazakhstan’s air navigation service, Kazaeronavigatsiya, confirmed that the bird strike compromised the plane’s steering control, leading to the emergency declaration.
Azerbaijan Airlines has yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Aviation authorities from Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are collaborating to investigate the crash and uncover the chain of events leading to the disaster.
