The Delta State Police Command has apprehended a 30-year-old man, Daniel Onyejekwe, for the alleged murder of Christian Goodluck on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2025, in Sapele.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, made the disclosure in a statement on Sunday, January 5, 2025. According to the statement, the incident stemmed from an altercation that turned fatal.
Alleged Assault Sparks Deadly Altercation
The suspect, Onyejekwe, reportedly claimed that the confrontation began when he saw Goodluck engaged in a quarrel with and assaulting his mother. Attempting to intervene escalated the situation, leading to a physical fight between the two men.
“The suspect stated that he met the deceased quarrelling with and assaulting his mother,” SP Edafe’s statement read. “The altercation turned violent, with both parties resorting to the use of a broken bottle.”
The clash took a deadly turn when Onyejekwe allegedly stabbed Goodluck with the sharp object. The injury proved fatal, resulting in Goodluck’s death shortly after.

SP Edafe expressed dismay over the violent beginning to the year, urging the public to exercise restraint and manage conflicts without resorting to violence.
“In this year 2025, please control your temper,” the police spokesperson said. “The suspect, Daniel Onyejekwe, aged 30, in Sapele, murdered one Christian Goodluck on 1/1/2025. What a way to start the new year.”

The Delta State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the incident. Onyejekwe is currently in custody and will face legal proceedings as the authorities work to unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
