In a recent address to his supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge in Lagos, former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, contested the legitimacy of his removal from office. He emphasized that due process was not adhered to during the impeachment proceedings and maintained that he remains the rightful Speaker until proper procedures are followed.
Obasa stated, “I am not afraid of being removed as the Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, but the right process was not followed. I believe I am still the Speaker until they follow the right process.”
On January 13, 2025, Obasa was impeached by members of the Lagos State House of Assembly over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. Following his removal, Mojisola Meranda, the then Deputy Speaker, was elected as the new Speaker, marking the first time a female has held this position in the Assembly’s history.
The impeachment has been a subject of significant discussion, with various stakeholders expressing their views. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu distanced himself from the proceedings, emphasizing the separation of powers and stating that the impeachment was strictly a legislative affair.

Obasa’s tenure as Speaker, which began in 2015, has been marred by several controversies, including allegations of financial mismanagement. In 2020, reports emerged accusing him of misappropriation of public funds, allegations which he denied. More recently, a group known as the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition accused the Assembly of spending ₦17 billion on constructing a gate, a claim Obasa dismissed as “spurious and laughable.”
