Bashirat Fawehinmi-Biobaku, the eldest daughter of the late iconic human rights advocate, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, has publicly criticized fellow activist Dele Farotimi for what she described as “baseless accusations” against the revered legal luminary and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola.
Speaking during the 21st Annual Gani Fawehinmi Lecture held at Lagos Airport Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, Fawehinmi-Biobaku expressed her dismay over claims made by Farotimi in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. Farotimi had alleged that Babalola used his influence to manipulate the Supreme Court of Nigeria, a claim she described as defamatory and damaging to the integrity of the judiciary.
A Call to Defend Judicial Integrity
Fawehinmi-Biobaku emphasized that such allegations not only tarnish the reputation of an elder statesman but also undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s judicial system. Citing the words of Ethiopia’s former Emperor Haile Selassie, she warned against the dangers of inaction and silence in the face of injustice.
“In his publication, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, Dele Farotimi maligns both Aare Afe Babalola and the sanctity of the Supreme Court,” she stated. “While constructive criticism aimed at reform is welcome, it is crucial to distinguish between genuine calls for improvement and baseless accusations that erode public trust.”
Reaffirming a Legacy of Justice
Drawing on the principles of justice championed by her father, Fawehinmi-Biobaku urged Nigerians to resist the spread of false narratives, instead celebrating the contributions of individuals like Babalola who have dedicated their lives to justice and public service.
“As we honor the ideals of Fawehinmism and the legacy of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, let us reaffirm our commitment to defending the judiciary and its stalwarts,” she said. “Aare Afe Babalola’s story demonstrates that greatness is achieved through unwavering dedication, integrity, and service to humanity.”
