The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of five Nigerian nationals and one Ghanaian citizen following a violent armed robbery at a commercial bank in Accra earlier this week. According to police spokesperson Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the suspects were apprehended after an intense manhunt that lasted several hours following Monday’s early morning attack.
Security officials revealed that the armed gang used sophisticated weapons and explosives to breach the bank’s security systems before making away with an undisclosed amount of money. Police authorities stated that their rapid response team engaged the robbers in a gun battle near the crime scene, ultimately leading to the arrest of all six suspects.
During a press briefing at police headquarters, Commissioner George Asare displayed several firearms and ammunition recovered from the suspects, along with portions of the stolen cash. The police commissioner emphasized that investigations were ongoing to determine possible connections to other recent robberies in the Greater Accra region.
The Ghana Immigration Service confirmed they were working closely with Nigerian authorities through INTERPOL channels to verify the identities and possible criminal records of the foreign suspects. Local residents expressed shock at the brazen attack, with many calling for increased security measures at financial institutions across the country.
Police assured the public that additional security personnel had been deployed to banks and other sensitive financial installations as a precautionary measure. The arrested suspects are expected to appear in court later this week as authorities continue their investigation into what they described as a well-orchestrated criminal operation.
