Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has passionately appealed to residents to actively participate in the forthcoming local government elections, emphasizing the critical role of grassroots democracy in shaping the state’s future. The governor’s call to action underscores the importance of citizen engagement in determining leadership at the community level, where governance directly impacts daily life.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum in Alausa, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted how local government elections present a golden opportunity for Lagosians to elect competent leaders who will drive development in their immediate communities. “The strength of our democracy lies in the active participation of citizens at all levels of governance. These elections are your chance to choose leaders who will address your community’s specific needs,” the governor stated.
The governor assured residents of the state government’s commitment to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections, noting that the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has put necessary measures in place for a smooth electoral process. He reminded Lagosians that local councils serve as the closest tier of government to the people, handling essential services like primary healthcare, basic education, sanitation, and community infrastructure.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also emphasized that voter participation strengthens democratic institutions and fosters accountability. “When you vote, you don’t just elect leaders – you shape policies on waste management, local security, road maintenance, and other services that affect your family’s wellbeing every single day,” he explained.
The governor’s appeal comes as political parties intensify campaigns across the state’s 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas. With the elections scheduled for [insert date], Sanwo-Olu urged all eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and make their voices heard at the ballot box.

My dear Lagosians,
The local government elections will take place tomorrow (July 12, 2025). I call on all eligible voters across the state to come out in large numbers to participate in the exercise.
The local government is the closest tier of government to the people and plays a vital role in delivering essential services and fostering grassroots development.
The election offers Lagosians an opportunity to shape the leadership of their local councils by voting for Chairmen and councillors who will represent their interests and drive development at the community level.
This election is not just a constitutional process; it is a powerful expression of your voice and your civic responsibility; it is your right. I urge every registered voter to go out peacefully tomorrow, cast your vote, and be a part of the democratic process that strengthens our communities and our state.
To ensure a safe, orderly, and credible election, I have directed that security agencies be strategically deployed across all polling units and communities. Law enforcement officials will be present to protect voters, electoral officials, and election materials.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has assured me that they are ready for the election.
I urge all political stakeholders, party agents, and candidates to conduct themselves with decorum and to uphold the principles of peace, fairness, and respect for the rule of law throughout the election.
Our youths in particular should shun any form of violence and instead act as ambassadors of peace and democratic responsibility.
I assure you that Lagos will continue to set the pace in democratic development. I, therefore, affirm my administration’s commitment to free, fair, and transparent elections that reflect the will of our people.
