As the holy month of Ramadan begins, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on residents to embrace sacrifice, peace, and unity. He emphasized that Ramadan is a sacred period for deep reflection, renewed faith, and acts of kindness, urging all to embody these values in their daily lives.
During a Special Pre-Ramadan Prayer held at the State House in Alausa, Ikeja, themed “My Lord, Indeed I Am, For Whatever Good, You Would Send Me, In Need” (Quran 28:24), Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the significance of the holy month as a time for sacrifice, self-denial, and supplication. He noted that Ramadan unites Muslims daily as they break their fast, listen to God’s words, and remain in a state of prayer and grace.
The Governor also pointed out the coincidence of Ramadan with the Christian Lent season, stating that this convergence promotes unity, supplication, and devotion among people of faith. He called on all residents, regardless of religious affiliation, to come together in peace and harmony, allowing the teachings of the season to reflect in their relationships.
He said: “Ramadan Kareem to all our Muslim brothers and sisters. This sacred month is a time for deep reflection, renewed faith, and acts of kindness. May your fasting and prayers bring you peace, prosperity, and abundant blessings.
“As we embrace the values of compassion, unity, and generosity, let us uplift one another and extend love to those in need. Lagos is a home for all, and in this season of devotion, we pray for continued progress and harmony in our state and beyond.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was the Chief Host at the Special Ramadan Prayer held at the Lagos House Mosque Ground, Ikeja, on Friday evening, urged Lagosians to ensure that “the period of the season reflects in our relationship among ourselves.”
He said: “Ramadan is a period of holiness. It is a period in which people need to admonish and encourage themselves in their faith. It is a period where people are in constant conversation with God.
“As a people, we need to continue to ensure that we live in the peace and harmony that Lagos is known for. This is a time that we all need to come together in prayers and supplications. It is a time for us to do the right thing.”
Special prayers were offered for President Bola Tinubu, Governor Sanwo-Olu and his family, the Deputy Governor, State Executive Council, Speaker and lawmakers, Chief Judge, judiciary, Head of Service, public servants, and the people of Lagos. The event also featured the recitation of the Holy Quran in both Arabic and English, underscoring the significance of collective prayers in fostering unity and development in the state.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment where all religious groups can thrive, making Lagos a model for peaceful coexistence among diverse faiths.
