Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former gang leader convicted of orchestrating the murder of legendary American rapper Tupac Shakur, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison, bringing a major development in a case that remained unsolved for nearly three decades.
Davis, 63, received the sentence on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, following his conviction in August for first-degree murder in connection with Shakur’s fatal shooting in Las Vegas in September 1996.
Prosecutors maintained that Davis organised the attack and supplied the firearm used by his associates in the drive-by shooting, although he was not alleged to have pulled the trigger himself.
According to court proceedings, investigators revived the case after Davis made public statements about his involvement in interviews and his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend. Those statements became important evidence in the prosecution.
Shakur, one of hip-hop’s most influential artists, was shot on September 7, 1996, while travelling in a BMW with music executive Marion “Suge” Knight near the Las Vegas Strip. He died six days later at the age of 25.
The killing followed a confrontation involving members of Davis’s circle and Shakur’s entourage earlier that evening, amid longstanding rivalries between rival gang factions.
During sentencing, Judge Carli Kierny stressed the gravity of the crime and its lasting impact on Shakur’s family.
Members of the rapper’s family also addressed the court, expressing the enduring pain caused by his death. His sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, spoke about the loss of her brother and the future he never had the opportunity to fulfil.
Davis is the only person charged in connection with Shakur’s murder. His defence had challenged the prosecution’s evidence, arguing that his past statements did not establish his guilt. Following sentencing, Davis indicated that he would appeal the conviction.
The sentence marks a significant milestone in the decades-long pursuit of justice for Shakur, whose music and cultural influence continue to resonate with fans worldwide.
