Kenyan Police Accused Of Brutality As Video Evidence Shows Violent Crackdown On Protesters

Published:

Disturbing video footage has emerged showing Kenyan police officers trapping, beating, and teargassing peaceful protesters in a blocked alley, sparking fresh outrage over police brutality in Kenya. The incident occurred during nationwide demonstrations against police violence and extrajudicial killings, with Amnesty International Kenya reporting that at least 16 protesters were killed in clashes with security forces.

In one harrowing clip, a protester can be heard pleading, “Larry ukienda tutauliwa” (“If you leave, we’ll get killed”), highlighting the fear of state-sanctioned violence among demonstrators. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as officers fired live ammunition and tear gas into crowds, even as protesters attempted to flee.

Amnesty Kenya condemned the excessive use of force, calling for an independent investigation into the human rights violations. The organization documented multiple cases of arbitrary arrests, beatings, and fatal shootings across the country, raising concerns about police accountability in Kenya.Despite government claims that the protests were “infiltrated by violent elements,” activists and civil society groups argue that the crackdown was a disproportionate response to peaceful demands for police reform. The demonstrations were initially organized to denounce extrajudicial executions and unlawful detentions, only to be met with further state violence.

The Kenyan police brutality video has since gone viral, drawing condemnation from international human rights organizations. Calls for justice have intensified under the hashtag #EndPoliceBrutalityKE, with demands for transparent investigations into the deaths and injuries reported.

As tensions escalate, questions remain over whether the Kenyan government will take concrete steps to address police impunity or if the cycle of protest violence in Kenya will continue unchecked.
