The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through a series of strategic projects aimed at overhauling infrastructure, transportation, and healthcare systems. These initiatives were detailed during the Citizens’ Engagement Forum held on Friday, January 24, 2025, at the STO Resource Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, where the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotosho, provided insights into the state’s developmental roadmap.
Infrastructure Development
In a significant move to address water scarcity, Lagos State has entered into an agreement with the Ogun State Government to source water from the Adiyan reservoir. The state has allocated N600 million for the supply of 70 million gallons of water per day, aiming to ensure the availability of pipe-borne water to Lagosians. Despite existing challenges, the government is making concerted efforts to overcome obstacles and provide sustainable water solutions.
Healthcare Advancements
As part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Development Agenda, the state is set to commission a new general hospital in Ojo, marking the first such development in a decade. This facility is poised to significantly enhance healthcare services for residents in the area.
Additionally, the government is constructing a Mental Health Institute and Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre in Ketu-Ejirin, Epe. Slated to be the largest of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa, the 500-bed facility will feature living quarters, consultation rooms, and more, all situated on a 25-hectare expanse. Further bolstering the healthcare sector, the Massey Street Children’s Hospital is undergoing development to become a leading pediatric facility in Sub-Saharan Africa. This project aims to reduce infant mortality rates and improve maternal health services, ensuring that women have access to adequate care during childbirth.
Transportation Enhancements
In the realm of transportation, the government has invested in the Lagos Rail Mass Transit system to improve urban mobility. The Blue Line, which commenced operations on September 4, 2023, currently runs from Marina to Mile 2, with plans for future extensions. Additionally, the Red Line began passenger services on October 15, 2024, connecting Agbado to Oyingbo, with ongoing efforts to extend the line to Marina. These developments are part of a broader strategy to integrate various modes of transportation, including water and road networks, to ease movement across the state.
The government is also focusing on water transportation, having commissioned 15 locally built ferries on May 29, 2024, with plans to introduce 10 more, bringing the total to 25. These ferries are designed to international standards and symbolize the potential of local engineering talent. Furthermore, approximately 16 jetties are ready for commissioning in various locations, enhancing the state’s water transport infrastructure.
Food Security Initiatives
To address food security and stabilize market prices, Lagos State is constructing a food logistics hub in Epe, anticipated to be the largest in Sub-Saharan Africa upon completion. The first phase of this facility is expected to be operational within the year, with the capacity to store food sufficient to feed at least five million people every three months. This initiative is projected to mitigate the impact of inflation on food prices, benefiting residents across the state.
Energy Efficiency Measures
In a bid to enhance energy efficiency, the state has transitioned to solar-powered street lighting, installing 2,000 solar lights. This move addresses the high costs previously incurred from powering generators for street lighting, which amounted to N600 million per month at the onset of the Sanwo-Olu administration.
