In January 2025, Tanzania’s Kagera region reported a resurgence of the Marburg virus, a highly virulent pathogen akin to Ebola. The outbreak resulted in nine fatalities out of ten confirmed cases, underscoring the virus’s alarming mortality rate.
Marburg virus disease is a severe hemorrhagic fever characterized by sudden onset of high fever, intense headache, and malaise. Within a week, many patients develop severe hemorrhagic manifestations, including bleeding from various orifices. The virus is transmitted to humans from fruit bats and spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated surfaces. Currently, there is no approved vaccine or antiviral treatment for Marburg, making early detection and supportive care crucial.
The Kagera region, located in northwestern Tanzania, shares borders with Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi, raising concerns about potential cross-border transmission. The area’s connectivity to major transport hubs, including the capital Dar es Salaam, further amplifies the risk of wider dissemination.
Tanzanian health officials, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), have initiated comprehensive measures to contain the outbreak. These efforts include identifying and monitoring approximately 281 contacts of the confirmed cases, enhancing surveillance, and implementing strict infection prevention protocols.
