In a historic turn of events, the Lagos State House of Assembly has appointed Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as its new Speaker, marking the first time a woman has held this esteemed position. This decision comes in the wake of the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13, 2025, following allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
Meranda, who has been representing Apapa Constituency I since June 2015, previously served as Deputy Speaker from June 2023 until her recent elevation. Her ascent to the speakership was solidified through a consensus between the lawmakers and the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), who collectively endorsed her leadership.
The transition in leadership was not without its challenges. Some factions within the Assembly advocated for the speakership to remain within the Lagos West Senatorial District, following Obasa’s departure. However, representatives from the district, along with other Assembly members, firmly supported Meranda’s appointment, expressing their confidence in her leadership abilities.
Upon assuming office, Speaker Meranda emphasized her commitment to transparency and effective governance. She stated, “We are dedicated to restoring the integrity of this House and serving the people of Lagos State with utmost diligence.”
The Governance Advisory Council, initially seeking a conciliatory path for the ousted Obasa, was met with unwavering support for Meranda from Assembly members across various districts. This unified stance underscores a collective desire for stable and progressive leadership within the Assembly.
