The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down eight rice shops and a warehouse in Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, in a sweeping operation against counterfeit rice production.
In a statement released on Friday, the agency disclosed that the facilities were involved in producing and distributing counterfeit rice, leading to the seizure of over 1,600 bags valued at approximately ₦5 billion.
The enforcement extended to Wuse and Garki markets in Abuja, following directives from NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, aimed at safeguarding public health during the festive season. The operation uncovered fake rice repackaged in branded bags such as Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aroso, designed to mislead consumers. Empty branded rice bags were also discovered at the Karu site.
Kenneth Azikiwe, NAFDAC’s Director in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), cautioned counterfeiters to desist from illegal practices or face severe legal consequences. He assured that suspects apprehended during the operation would be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent.
“This operation underscores our commitment to ensuring the safety of food products and protecting public health, especially during the festive season,” Azikiwe stated.
The crackdown is part of NAFDAC’s broader efforts to combat the distribution of substandard and falsified food products across the country.
