NCC Urges Collective Action To Protect Nigeria’s Telecom Infrastructure From Cyber Threats

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called for collaborative efforts to safeguard the country’s telecommunications infrastructure from increasing cyber threats. This call to action was made during the annual Cybersecurity Conference 2024, held in Abuja, as the NCC emphasized the importance of a robust cybersecurity framework to ensure the safety of Nigeria’s telecom sector.

In his opening remarks, the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), Dr Aminu Maida  highlighted the vital role of telecom infrastructure in Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.

He stated, “Our telecommunications infrastructure is not only a critical national asset but also a key enabler of economic development. Therefore, securing this infrastructure against cyber threats is a collective responsibility.”

Aminu further warned about the potential consequences of neglecting cybersecurity, noting the rising sophistication of cyberattacks globally. He urged stakeholders to take proactive steps to mitigate these risks.

He said, “We must not underestimate the importance of collaboration. It is only through collective action, partnerships, and the sharing of information that we can ensure our telecom systems remain secure.”

The conference featured various industry experts, government officials, and private sector stakeholders, who discussed strategies to combat cyber threats in Nigeria’s telecom ecosystem.

Participants were urged to implement advanced cybersecurity measures, enhance the sharing of threat intelligence, and support government policies aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s cyber defense systems.

In closing, Professor Danbatta reaffirmed the NCC’s commitment to creating a secure and resilient telecommunications environment.

He said, “We remain dedicated to supporting all stakeholders in addressing the evolving challenges of cybersecurity. Together, we can build a safe and secure digital future for Nigeria.”
