The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, has ordered the immediate suspension of commanding officers along the Lagos-Seme border corridor following allegations of extortion by personnel of the service. Advertisement The action comes in response to viral online videos and reports accusing immigration officers stationed at the busy border route of harassing and extorting travellers.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, Nandap strongly condemned the alleged conduct, describing it as a direct violation of the agency’s core values and operational standards.
“The Comptroller-General unequivocally condemns the actions depicted in these reports, as such conduct is unacceptable and stands in direct violation of the core values, ethics, and operational standards of the Service,” the statement read.
This is not the first time the Seme border has come under the spotlight. The Federal Government under former President Muhammadu Buhari shut the land borders between 2019 and 2020 in a bid to curb smuggling and tighten border security—a move that sparked widespread economic criticism before the borders were eventually reopened.
Since assuming office in January 2024, Nandap has repeatedly emphasised discipline, transparency, and professionalism as key pillars of her leadership.
