The Nigeria Police Force recently held a grand pull-out parade in Lagos State to celebrate the exceptional careers of three distinguished officers—Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Abiodun Sylvester Alabi, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Joshua Ayodeji Ogundele, and AIG Olarewanju Stephen Olaosebikan. In his farewell speech, DIG Abiodun Sylvester Alabi reflected on his 34-year journey in the Force, expressing a deep sense of introspection and fulfillment. He quoted Theodore Roosevelt, emphasizing the importance of belief and determination:
“As I stand before you today, I am overwhelmed with a mix of emotions—emotions of introspection and contemplation; and a sense of gratitude and fulfillment. As we bid farewell to the Nigeria Police Force, the institution that has been our home for the past 34 years, I am reminded of the wise words of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States of America: ‘Believe you can and you’re halfway there.’”
Alabi spoke about the challenges of their profession, the sacrifices made, and their steadfast commitment to serving Nigeria. He highlighted how, despite the obstacles they faced, they remained resolute in their pursuit of justice.
“Entering the Nigeria Police Force, driven by a passion for justice and a desire to make a difference in the lives of our fellow citizens, we overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles and made sacrifices that tested our resilience. Yet, through it all, we emerged stronger and more resilient, guided by our unwavering commitment to duty and humanity.”
DIG Alabi emphasized the importance of leadership, not as titles or positions, but as a duty to influence others positively:
“Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another. We must offer our sincere apologies to anyone who may have been offended through our actions, reactions, or inactions during our service. Our legacy will live on, inspiring a new generation of police officers and shaping the future of the Nigeria Police Force.”
This message resonated deeply with his colleagues and those in attendance, as they reflected on the impact the officers had on the Force and the nation.
The retiring officers expressed heartfelt gratitude to their families, colleagues, and the public for their unwavering support throughout their careers. DIG Alabi noted:
“We most especially extend our gratitude to our respective families, who have supported us throughout our career, making sacrifices and enduring the challenges that come with being part of a police family. Your love, encouragement, and unwavering support have been our rock and motivation.”
