The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA) has strongly condemned the alleged killing of a 50-year-old Nigerian national, Jeremiah Okoye, while in police custody in Limpopo Province, South Africa. The tragic incident, which has sparked outrage within the Nigerian community, occurred on January 13, 2025.
Okoye, a native of Ezinifite, Nnewi, Anambra State, had lived in South Africa for over two decades, residing at No. 71, Magazyn Street, Polokwane. His death has raised serious questions about police conduct and accountability in South Africa.
NICASA President-General, Frank Onyekwelu, speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on January 17, revealed that investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding Okoye’s death.
“We call on the South African police to uphold the rule of law and adhere to their constitutional responsibilities,” Onyekwelu stated firmly.
In response to the incident, NICASA has officially notified the Nigerian High Commission and Consulate in South Africa. Additionally, the organization has reached out to Okoye’s family and friends to provide support during this difficult time.
Onyekwelu emphasized the need for justice, highlighting that the Nigerian community in South Africa is tired of what they perceive as systemic police brutality.
“Our lives matter, and nationality should never be equated with criminality,” he said. “We demand a thorough investigation and justice for Jeremiah Okoye. We urge all Nigerians in South Africa to remain law-abiding while we rely on the authorities to uncover the truth.”
The NICASA leader also expressed concerns that Okoye’s case could join the growing list of unresolved deaths involving Nigerians in South Africa. He called for a renewed commitment from both South African and Nigerian authorities to address these recurring issues and protect the rights of foreign nationals.
The incident has reignited conversations about the safety and rights of Nigerians living abroad, with many calling for stronger diplomatic interventions to prevent further occurrences.
