Polytechnic workers across Nigeria have declared a three-day warning strike scheduled to take place from Wednesday, January 22, to Friday, January 24, 2025. The announcement has raised concerns over potential disruptions in academic activities at polytechnics nationwide.
The decision for the strike was confirmed during an appearance by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, on Channels Television’s 2024 Year-End Review program on December 31, 2024. While the minister did not elaborate on the specific grievances prompting the action, the strike highlights ongoing tensions within the country’s tertiary education sector.
History Returns To School Curriculum In 2025
In a related development, Minister Alausa also revealed that Nigerian history will be reinstated into the basic school curriculum starting in 2025. Speaking on the same program, he emphasized the importance of reconnecting younger generations with the nation’s past, addressing criticisms of the subject’s removal in 2007.
“History was removed from the curriculum in 2007, and for years, we’ve had people criticizing this move. We now have a generation disconnected from our history, which doesn’t happen in any part of the world,” Alausa said.
The minister added that President Bola Tinubu has mandated the reintroduction of Nigerian history as a compulsory subject for students in primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schools. This policy aims to foster national identity and historical awareness among the youth.
The announcement is part of broader reforms in the education sector, which seeks to address systemic challenges while promoting cultural and intellectual growth.
