…As Death Toll Rise To 40
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in the stampede that occurred during a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State. The Chief of Staff to Oyo State Governor, Mr. Segun Ogunwuyi, confirmed that the death toll has now reached 40, with several others still in critical condition.
The incident, which took place on Wednesday, occurred during an end-of-year party at the main gate of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the President has directed a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Oyo State, particularly to the grieving families who have lost their children in this heartbreaking incident.
“In this moment of mourning, President Tinubu stands in solidarity with the affected families and offers prayers that the Almighty God will grant peace to the souls of those who have departed in this unfortunate event,” the statement read.
The President has urged relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate whether negligence or any deliberate actions contributed to the tragic incident. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.
“President Tinubu has instructed the Oyo State Government to take all necessary steps to prevent such tragedies from happening again,” the statement added. “This includes a comprehensive review of public event safety measures, the strict enforcement of safety regulations, and regular safety audits of event venues.”
President Tinubu also called on event organizers to prioritize the safety of all attendees, especially children. He stressed the importance of integrating professional security, protocols, and logistics to ensure the safety of participants.
“Our children’s safety and well-being must remain paramount,” the President stated. “No event should ever compromise their safety or take precedence over their lives.”
Police Confirm Arrests in Connection with the Incident
Meanwhile, the Oyo State Police Command confirmed that 35 children lost their lives, with six others injured in critical condition. In a statement issued by the police spokesman, Adewale Osifeso, the organizers of the event, including Naomi Silekunola—estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi—and media partners, Agidigbo FM, along with the school principal and five others, have been arrested in connection with the tragedy.
The police revealed that the event, organized by the Wings Foundation and Agidigbo FM, was held without the necessary permissions and safety measures in place.
The police have initiated a thorough investigation into the incident, assuring the public that those found responsible will be held accountable.
“The Oyo State Police Command extends its condolences to the families of the victims and assures the public that every effort is being made to prevent similar tragedies in the future,” the statement concluded.
