SDP’s Adewole Adebayo Hints At Stepping Aside For Peter Obi In 2027 To Forge Stronger Opposition Front

Published:

In a move that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has signaled his willingness to step aside for former Labour Party presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, in a unified opposition front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking during a recent political roundtable, Adebayo emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria’s opposition parties to form a formidable coalition that prioritizes national interest over personal ambition. He noted that if stepping aside would contribute to a stronger, united front capable of challenging the APC’s dominance, he would not hesitate to do so.

“My goal has never been about personal ambition. If a candidate like Peter Obi—who has mobilized a significant youth base and energized voters—can serve as a rallying point for the opposition, then stepping aside becomes a service to democracy,” Adebayo stated.

Adebayo, a lawyer and founder of KAFTAN TV, ran under the SDP in 2023, campaigning on a platform of justice reform, transparency, and social equity. Though he garnered limited votes nationally, he gained a reputation for articulate, issue-based politics.

The SDP leader’s comments come amid renewed discussions on opposition collaboration, with Peter Obi continuing to engage with leaders from various political blocs following his performance in the 2023 elections, where he emerged as a major third force in Nigerian politics.

Observers believe that a potential merger or coalition involving the SDP, Labour Party, and elements of the PDP could drastically alter the dynamics of the 2027 race, especially if the APC continues to face economic and public trust challenges.

Adebayo’s gesture is being viewed by many as a strategic move to prioritize political unity over fragmentation, which has historically weakened opposition prospects in Nigeria’s multi-party system.

No official agreement has yet been formalized between the SDP and Peter Obi or his associates, but insiders suggest preliminary talks are ongoing among key figures within opposition ranks.

If actualized, a broad-based coalition led or supported by Peter Obi with backing from SDP and other political actors could serve as the most credible threat to APC hegemony since 2015. Political analysts, however, caution that ideological alignment, power-sharing agreements, and candidate selection processes will be critical factors in determining the success of any alliance.
