A 19-year-old female prison officer at HMP Five Wells in Wellingborough has been suspended and arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office after a video allegedly showing her engaging in a sexual act with an inmate surfaced last week.
The footage, reportedly recorded within the £235 million Category C facility, allegedly depicts the officer performing a sexual act on the inmate before engaging in intercourse. The video has since been circulated among other prisoners and even shared with individuals outside the prison.
HMP Five Wells, managed by security firm G4S, houses approximately 1,700 male inmates and was inaugurated in 2022 as a state-of-the-art correctional facility.
This incident adds to a troubling trend of inappropriate relationships between prison staff and inmates. In the past three years, 29 female prison officers have been dismissed for engaging in sexual activities with prisoners, compared to just nine cases reported between 2017 and 2019.
A source familiar with the case described the officer’s behavior as “shocking,” particularly in light of recent scandals involving similar misconduct. The source criticized her actions, noting that she had “risked everything” and calling the incident a severe breach of trust and professionalism.
A spokesperson for HMP Five Wells confirmed the officer’s suspension and arrest, stating:
“A prison custody officer has been suspended and arrested by Northamptonshire Police on suspicion of misconduct in a public office. It would be inappropriate to comment further while the investigation is ongoing.”
Northamptonshire Police also acknowledged the arrest, saying:
“This is a live investigation, and we cannot provide further details at this time.”
This is not the first controversy to emerge from the prison. In a separate incident, a 31-year-old former officer, Rachel Stanton, was discovered to have engaged in a romantic relationship with an armed robber incarcerated at the facility. Evidence of their relationship, including intimate photographs and a love letter, was found in the inmate’s cell in 2022.
Stanton was suspended, and her inmate lover was transferred to another prison. Despite her dismissal, she continued visiting him, resulting in the birth of a child. Stanton later admitted to willful misconduct in public office and received an 18-month suspended sentence with mandatory rehabilitation activities.
The incident has reignited concerns over the conduct and ethical standards of prison staff, particularly within privately managed facilities. Observers have called for stricter oversight and training to address the rising cases of inappropriate relationships between staff and inmates, which undermine the integrity of correctional institutions.
As investigations continue, the latest case raises pressing questions about the measures in place to prevent such breaches and ensure accountability within the prison system.
