A suspected terrorist attack on the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) facilities at the Kangiwa border in Kebbi State claimed the lives of a local watchman and three contractors on Friday, January 10, 2025. The incident, which occurred at approximately 7:20 PM, left the border post in disarray, with substantial damages to its security infrastructure.
Kenneth Udo, the Public Relations Officer of the NIS, confirmed the attack in a statement released on Sunday. He emphasized that while no NIS officers were harmed during the assault, the service mourns the tragic loss of its personnel and contractors.
“The service regrets to announce a recent attack by a suspected terrorist group on our facilities and contractors on-site at the Kangiwa border. The attack led to the death of four persons, including a local watchman and three contractors. We also recorded substantial damages to our security facilities,” Udo stated.
He extended condolences to the families of the deceased, pledging that the NIS, in collaboration with other security agencies, is actively pursuing those responsible for the violence.
“We are working tirelessly with our sister agencies to identify and apprehend those behind these heinous acts and ensure they face justice,” Udo said.
Despite the tragic incident, Udo reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s borders. “The service remains resolute and undeterred in carrying on with its core mandate of border security in tandem with the goal of securing the nation,” he added.
The attack underscores the persistent security challenges facing border areas in Nigeria, where terrorist activities have disrupted operations and claimed lives in recent years. Security experts have urged intensified measures to protect critical infrastructure and personnel in these vulnerable regions.
