Tensions Rise as PDP National Secretariat Enters Lockdown Over Leadership Clash

Published:

Recent clashes over the position of National Secretary within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have led to a significant security response at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. The tension erupted when Samuel Anyanwu, former National Secretary and one-time Imo State governorship candidate, clashed with Sunday Ude-Okoye, the man endorsed by the South East Caucus to replace him.

The altercation took place during a scheduled Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting, which was supposed to resolve the matter amicably. However, when Anyanwu’s aide forcibly removed Ude-Okoye from the meeting shortly after the closed-door session began, it sparked a physical confrontation between their respective supporters. As the situation grew more heated, soldiers, police officers, and personnel from the National Security and

This leadership struggle within the PDP has been brewing since Anyanwu vacated the National Secretary’s position in early 2024 to focus on his failed gubernatorial campaign in Imo State. Following his departure, Ude-Okoye was endorsed as his replacement, a decision that Anyanwu has fiercely contested since. The ongoing battle for control over the party’s operations is further complicated by a recent legal ruling.

On December 20, 2024, the Appeal Court in Enugu upheld a previous ruling by the High Court, affirming Ude-Okoye as the legitimate National Secretary. Despite this, Anyanwu has filed an appeal and requested a Stay of Execution, which has kept the dispute unresolved. Legal maneuvers are being spearheaded by Dr. Musa (SAN), who was nominated by Acting National Chairman Iliya Damagum to represent the party in court.

The unfolding crisis within the PDP is raising concerns among party members and political analysts alike, who fear that the prolonged power struggle could further destabilize the opposition party ahead of upcoming elections. Calls for unity and a clear resolution to the leadership impasse are growing louder, as many stakeholders worry about the party’s ability to present a strong, unified front in future electoral contests.

As this political drama continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how it will impact not only the leadership of the PDP but also the broader political landscape in Nigeria.
