President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will confer National Honours on selected members of the National Assembly as part of events marking the 2025 Democracy Day celebration on Thursday, June 12. This was disclosed in an official statement released by the Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., on Sunday in Abuja.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the event will feature a Special Joint Sitting of the National Assembly, during which the President—attending as Special Guest of Honour—will deliver a landmark address to both chambers of the legislature.
The commemorative programme will also include goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the bestowal of National Honours on distinguished lawmakers in recognition of their service to democratic governance.
The theme for this year’s Democracy Day is:
“26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.”
Rotimi Jr. described the Joint Sitting as a symbolic and pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, emphasizing the legislature’s central role in upholding democratic values, promoting transparency, and ensuring development across the country.
He encouraged Nigerians to approach the day with renewed patriotism and unity, viewing it as an opportunity to reflect on democratic gains and commit to the collective task of building a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous nation.
