Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have recovered a large cache of high-caliber ammunition concealed inside a drainage channel in the Bulumkutu Railway area of Maiduguri, Borno State. The discovery was made on January 2, 2026, following a distress call regarding suspicious metallic objects in the drainage.
According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai, troops responded to the alert around 3:00 p.m. and uncovered 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads, additional live 12.7mm rounds, and several power banks hidden in the drainage.
The recovery is part of sustained operations and follow-up actions after recent cordon-and-search missions based on actionable intelligence. In the past week, multiple suicide bombers were reportedly neutralized or captured in related operations.
No casualties or security incidents were recorded during the ammunition recovery operation. The general security situation in the area remains calm, though the military has urged continued vigilance due to the unpredictable threat environment.
