The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) today hosted a landmark Investiture and Recognition Ceremony as part of its ongoing golden jubilee celebrations, honoring 62 distinguished individuals for their exceptional contributions to the institution’s growth and global reputation. The prestigious event, held at the university’s main auditorium, brought together academic leaders, alumni spanning several decades, faculty members, students, and dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond.
A Night of Honors: Recognizing Excellence Across Categories
The ceremony saw awards conferred in three significant categories, celebrating individuals who have gone above and beyond in their service to the university. The Award of Excellence was bestowed upon two extraordinary benefactors whose generosity has transformed key aspects of UNILORIN’s operations. Meanwhile, 10 Distinguished Alumni were recognized for their professional achievements and unwavering commitment to their alma mater. Additionally, 50 UNILORIN Ambassadors were honored for their role in promoting the university’s values and influence worldwide.
VC Egbewole Hails Awardees for Institutional Loyalty
In his keynote address, Vice-Chancellor Professor Wahab Egbewole, SAN, commended the honorees for embodying the university’s core principles of service, dedication, and selflessness.
“These individuals have shown what it truly means to believe in an institution’s vision and contribute to its growth without hesitation,” Prof. Egbewole remarked. “Their actions remind us that one good turn indeed deserves another.”
Reflecting on the university’s 50-year journey, the VC recounted the rigorous selection process overseen by faculty members and validated by the Centre for Advancement, ensuring only the most deserving candidates were recognized.
Extraordinary Benefactors: Two Non-Alumni Who Made a Difference
Among the honorees were two non-alumni whose remarkable contributions have left an indelible mark on UNILORIN:

Dr. Tunji Olowolafe, a 1984 medical graduate, was celebrated for sponsoring 40 academic staff members to international conferences with ₦5 million each, donating a Hilux vehicle, and supporting the acquisition of an Anatomage machine for medical training.

Dr. Murthada Adeniji, an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), earned recognition for installing a 90 KVA solar power system to power the Senate Building and offices, significantly reducing electricity costs. He also contributed a Hilux vehicle to the university’s fleet.
“These unsolicited acts of generosity reflect deep faith in our mission,” Prof. Egbewole noted.
UNILORIN’s Global Ascent: From Local Institution to Academic Powerhouse
Professor A.A. Adeoye, Chairman of the Planning Committee, delivered an inspiring speech titled “UNILORIN and the Memories of the Great Eldorado,” highlighting the university’s evolution from a regional institution to a globally recognized academic brand.
“UNILORIN is no longer just a Nigerian name—it is a force in global education. Today, we celebrate a legacy built on resilience, excellence, and international relevance,” he declared.
