Enugu State Reaffirms Commitment To Human Dignity On International Day For Poverty Eradication

Published:

October 17, 2025 – Professor Bernadette Okoli, Honourable Commissioner for Human Development and Poverty Eradication, Enugu State, today joined the global community in marking the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, reaffirming the state government’s unwavering commitment to lifting citizens out of poverty and restoring human dignity.

In her message, Professor Okoli emphasized that “poverty is not merely the absence of income, but the deprivation of basic human capabilities.

Under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah, we are implementing a comprehensive strategy that addresses poverty at its roots through education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and social protection.”

The Commissioner highlights several groundbreaking initiatives that are transforming the poverty landscape in Enugu State:

• The ongoing construction of 260 SMART Schools across all electoral wards, providing digital education to bridge the technological divide
• The establishment of 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centers to ensure accessible healthcare for all communities
• The revolutionary 9th Mile 24/7 Water Scheme that has ended decades of water scarcity in Enugu Urban
• Various skills acquisition and entrepreneurship programs targeting youth and women

“These initiatives represent our holistic approach to poverty eradication,” Professor Okoli stated. “We are building a future where every citizen of Enugu State can live with dignity, access quality education and healthcare, and participate fully in the state’s economic growth.”

The Commissioner called on all stakeholders – civil society organizations, private sector partners, community leaders, and international development partners – to join hands with the state government in the collective mission to eradicate poverty.

“On this International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, let us remember that our collective efforts today will determine the quality of life for generations to come. In Enugu State, we are committed to ensuring that no one is left behind,” Professor Okoli concluded.
