An official from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), identified as Sylvanus, was discovered lifeless on a Lagos street, prompting an official investigation into the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death.
A widely circulated video on social media depicts Sylvanus in burgundy traditional attire, lying motionless as bystanders, including police officers, search his belongings. Upon finding his EFCC identification card, one officer remarks, “Where does he work? Ah, it’s EFCC. His ID card is right there.”
The EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the incident, stating, “The death is being investigated.” He assured the public that efforts are underway to uncover the truth behind Sylvanus’s demise.
This tragedy follows closely on the heels of another incident less than two weeks prior, where EFCC officer Aminu Salisu was fatally shot during a raid in Awka, Anambra State. The EFCC condemned the killing and expressed concern over misleading narratives surrounding the event. In a statement, Oyewale emphasized the dangers posed by internet fraudsters, noting that intelligence has shown these criminals are increasingly involved in violent crimes.
The consecutive losses of EFCC personnel have heightened concerns about the safety of the agency’s operatives. Many are calling for enhanced protective measures for officials engaged in anti-corruption operations.
As investigations proceed, the public remains hopeful that the circumstances leading to Sylvanus’s untimely death will be clarified, and that appropriate actions will be taken to safeguard those dedicated to combating corruption in Nigeria.
