In a significant gesture of appreciation, the Federal Government of Nigeria has donated ₦30 million to the family of the late Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the esteemed designer of the nation’s flag. This donation was officially presented by Lanre Issa-Onilu, Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), and Olukemi Afolayan, the Oyo State Director of the agency, at the Akinkunmi residence in Elebu, Ibadan, on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, who passed away on August 30, 2023, at the age of 87, is celebrated for his iconic design of the Nigerian flag. His creation, featuring green and white vertical stripes, has become a symbol of national pride and unity. The green stripes represent Nigeria’s rich agricultural heritage, while the white stripe signifies peace and unity.
Following his demise, there was an anticipation of a state burial, as promised by the Federal Government. However, due to unforeseen delays, Pa Akinkunmi was laid to rest on September 6, 2024, a year after his passing. The recent donation underscores the government’s recognition of his contributions and its commitment to honoring national heroes.
During the presentation, Lanre Issa-Onilu emphasized that the ₦30 million donation was not a payment for services rendered but a gesture to support the Akinkunmi family and acknowledge Pa Akinkunmi’s invaluable contributions to the nation. He stated, “The donation of ₦30 million to the family of the renowned national flag designer was not to pay for the services of the late legend but to support his family in appreciation of his contributions to the country.”
In response, Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, one of the deceased’s sons, expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for the generous gesture. He acknowledged the recognition of his father’s legacy and the support extended to their family during this period.
The announcement of the donation has garnered widespread attention on social media platforms. On Instagram, popular blog Linda Ikeji’s Blog shared the news, prompting discussions about the importance of honoring national figures.
Similarly, on Facebook, users have lauded the government’s action, emphasizing the need to celebrate individuals who have significantly contributed to Nigeria’s identity.
Born on May 10, 1936, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi hailed from Owu in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He designed the Nigerian flag in 1959 while studying at Norwood Technical College in London. His design was selected the following year, just before Nigeria gained independence. Throughout his life, he remained a symbol of patriotism and creativity.
The Federal Government’s donation to the family of the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi serves as a poignant reminder of the nation’s appreciation for individuals who have played pivotal roles in shaping its identity. This act not only honors the legacy of the man behind the national flag but also reinforces the importance of recognizing and supporting the families of national icons.
