At least eight operatives of the Anambra State Special Anti-Tout Squad are feared dead, with others seriously injured after their vehicle collided with a tipper truck along the Onitsha-Owerri Road in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, on the afternoon of January 31, 2025. The tragic accident occurred during the squad’s routine stop-and-search operations.
Reports on social media and various news outlets have provided conflicting accounts of the incident. One version suggests that the squad was speeding in a branded Toyota Hiace bus when it rammed into a tipper truck that was reportedly coming from another junction. Another version claims that the squad had been in pursuit of the truck before the fatal collision occurred.
After the crash, the bodies of the operatives were reportedly trapped inside the vehicle. Bystanders rushed to the scene and worked together to remove the victims, placing their bodies along the roadside as emergency services arrived. Tragically, many of the operatives were confirmed dead, while the injured were quickly transported to nearby hospitals.
A video of the accident has circulated widely on social media, with graphic images prompting reactions from concerned citizens. On X (formerly Twitter), one user shared their experience passing the scene, stating: “I just passed the scene of the Anti-Tout accident at Oba, and all I can say is, There are some jobs you don’t take, no matter what. Why would Anti-Tout be chasing a tipper, is that even their job? Will the Anambra State Government take responsibility for the families they left behind?”
The incident has sparked widespread debate and anger, with many questioning the role and actions of the Anti-Tout Squad. Social media users have criticized the potential recklessness of the pursuit, raising concerns about the safety of those involved in such operations and the adequacy of their training and supervision. Furthermore, the tragedy has prompted calls for accountability, especially regarding the Anambra State Government’s responsibility to support the victims’ families.
The devastating event has highlighted the risks faced by law enforcement and task force operatives in carrying out their duties, and the public’s growing demand for reforms and improved practices within security agencies.
