UPDATE: Tragic Gasoline Tanker Explosion Near Suleja Claims 98 Lives

Published:

A devastating explosion involving a gasoline tanker near Suleja, Niger State, Nigeria, has resulted in at least 98 fatalities. The incident occurred on January 18, 2025, when a tanker carrying approximately 60,000 liters of petrol overturned at the Dikko junction, spilling its contents. Local residents, including children, gathered to collect the spilled fuel, leading to a catastrophic explosion. The blast claimed the lives of those attempting to collect the fuel and bystanders, with many victims burned beyond recognition.

In addition to the fatalities, at least 69 individuals sustained injuries, with 52 reported to be in critical condition. The explosion also caused extensive property damage, including the destruction of at least 20 nearby shops, resulting in significant economic losses.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has expressed concern that the death toll may continue to rise as search and rescue operations proceed. Hussaini Isah, NEMA’s head of operations for Niger State, noted that the situation remains dire, with many victims burned beyond recognition.

This tragedy highlights the dangers associated with the collection of spilled fuel from tanker accidents, a practice that has led to numerous fatalities in Nigeria. The high gasoline prices, exacerbated by the removal of subsidies over a year ago, have driven individuals to engage in such perilous activities.

Authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid gathering around accident sites involving fuel tankers to prevent further loss of life. The incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and public awareness to prevent similar tragedies in the future
