In the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, 2025, seven inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, following the collapse of a section of the prison’s perimeter wall due to heavy rainfall. The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has launched a comprehensive manhunt in collaboration with other security agencies and community leaders to recapture the escapees.
This incident highlights the pressing need for infrastructural reforms within Nigeria’s correctional facilities. The Ilesa facility, commissioned in 1943, was originally designed to accommodate 600 inmates but has been reported to house over 700, leading to overcrowded conditions. Such conditions not only compromise the safety and security of the facilities but also hinder effective rehabilitation programs for inmates.
The NCoS has urged the public to assist in the recapture efforts by providing any information that could lead to the apprehension of the escapees. They have provided dedicated hotlines for this purpose: 07087086005, 09060004598, and 08075050006.
This escape is part of a troubling pattern of prison breaks in Nigeria, often attributed to infrastructural decay and inadequate security measures. In recent years, similar incidents have occurred in various parts of the country, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in the nation’s correctional system.
The Nigerian government must prioritize the rehabilitation and modernization of correctional facilities to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of both inmates and the general public.
