A Nigerian Police Inspector, Okolie Amechi, has been fatally shot in a tragic incident involving his 10-year-old son at their family residence in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
According to a statement issued by the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, June 15, 2025, following an accidental discharge from the Inspector’s service rifle.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the young boy, unaware that the AK-47 rifle was loaded, accidentally pulled the trigger, striking Inspector Amechi in the back. The bullet also hit the officer’s second child in the hand.
Emergency responders rushed both victims to a nearby hospital, where the Inspector was pronounced dead by the attending physician. The second child, however, is said to be responding well to treatment.
SP Ikenga confirmed that the rifle has been recovered, while the remains of the late Inspector have been deposited in the morgue.
“The Command deeply regrets this unfortunate incident and extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Inspector Amechi,” Ikenga stated. “We also wish the injured child a swift and full recovery.”
While investigations continue, the tragic incident has reignited discussions on firearm safety, particularly in homes where security personnel live with their families.
The Anambra State Police Command has yet to comment on whether any procedural violations contributed to the accident but assured the public that a thorough review will be conducted to prevent future occurrences.
This marks yet another avoidable tragedy linked to accidental firearm discharge, raising concerns over the handling of weapons in domestic settings.
