Nigerian Senate Suspends Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan For Misconduct Amid Sexual Assault Allegation Against Senate President

Published:

The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, citing misconduct unrelated to her recent sexual assault accusation against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, accused Senate President Akpabio of sexual assault during a session in February 2025. The Senate’s ethics committee dismissed the allegation due to procedural violations. Subsequently, the Senate suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for allegedly refusing to sit in her assigned seat, speaking without recognition, and making abusive remarks against the Senate leadership.

The suspension, effective immediately, bars Akpoti-Uduaghan from accessing her office and withdraws her allowances and security for six months. Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele stated that the suspension aims to uphold the Senate’s integrity and advised Akpoti-Uduaghan to use this period to familiarize herself with Senate rules.

The suspension has sparked debates on social media, with critics alleging that it may be a retaliatory move linked to her sexual assault allegation against Akpabio. Chioma Agwuegbo, executive director of TechHerNG, criticized the ethics committee’s handling of the case, suggesting bias in their proceedings.

In response to her suspension and the dismissal of her assault allegation, Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a lawsuit against Senate President Akpabio, seeking ₦100 billion in damages. She maintains that her suspension is unjust and has vowed to challenge it legally.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly concerning the representation and treatment of female lawmakers. As one of only four women in the 109-seat Senate, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension raises concerns about gender dynamics and the handling of misconduct allegations in Nigerian politics.

The situation continues to evolve, with many Nigerians and international observers closely monitoring the developments and their implications for governance and gender equity in the country.
