Published:

In a concerted effort to combat cybercrime, operatives from the Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 37 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud. The operation took place at Commissioners’ Quarters, Dr. J. O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite, Awka, Anambra State, following credible intelligence reports linking the suspects to fraudulent online activities.

The all-male suspects were apprehended during a sting operation, which led to the confiscation of six exotic cars, numerous laptops, and mobile phones. These items are believed to have been instrumental in the execution of their alleged cybercrimes. The EFCC has indicated that the suspects will face charges in court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

This recent crackdown underscores the EFCC’s unwavering commitment to eradicating cybercrime in Nigeria. The commission continues to intensify its efforts, as evidenced by previous operations in the region. Notably, in May 2024, the EFCC arrested 46 suspected internet fraudsters in Awka, seizing mobile phones, laptops, and six exotic cars during the operation.

Similarly, in October 2023, 32 suspects were apprehended in simultaneous sting operations in Awka and Enugu, with items such as phones, laptops, and luxury vehicles recovered.

The EFCC’s consistent actions serve as a stern warning to individuals involved in cybercrime, emphasizing that such illicit activities will not be tolerated. The commission remains steadfast in its mission to protect the nation’s cyberspace and bring perpetrators to justice.
