Abuja, Nigeria | July 14, 2025

The Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a national public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13. This solemn declaration extends President Bola Tinubu’s earlier proclamation of seven days of national mourning, during which all flags will fly at half-mast across Nigeria and at diplomatic missions worldwide.

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, announced the holiday in an official statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, describing the gesture as a fitting tribute to Buhari’s decades of patriotic service. “President Buhari dedicated his life to Nigeria’s unity and progress with remarkable integrity,” the Minister stated, urging citizens to use the day for quiet reflection on the late leader’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and national development.

The statement emphasized Buhari’s enduring legacy, from his military service to his two-term presidency, during which he championed anti-corruption reforms and infrastructure development. Nigerians were encouraged to honour his memory by upholding the values of peace, patriotism, and national cohesion that defined his leadership. The Federal Government also extended heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians mourning the loss of the statesman.

As preparations continue for the former president’s state funeral, this national pause provides citizens an opportunity to collectively commemorate a leader whose life became intertwined with Nigeria’s modern history. The holiday underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring Buhari receives dignified honours befitting his service to the nation.
