FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday To Celebrate 2025 Democracy Day

Published:

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

This announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday by Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.

According to the statement, Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the official declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulating Nigerians on 26 consecutive years of uninterrupted democratic governance.

“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured. The last 26 years tell the story of our resilience, strength, and courage—and a hope renewed like never before,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

He further emphasized the commitment of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Renewed Hope administration to upholding the universal democratic principles anchored on the free will of the people to shape the nation’s political, economic, social, and cultural systems.

June 12 holds significant national value, commemorating the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest election, won by late Chief MKO Abiola. Since its formal recognition as Democracy Day in 2018, the day has become a potent symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey and civic awakening.

The minister called on all citizens to reflect on the sacrifices of past heroes and to contribute actively to nation-building through civic responsibility, patriotism, and the defense of democratic values.
