The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has initiated investigations into three tragic stampede incidents that occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State; Okija, Anambra State; and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement released on Saturday, December 21, Egbetokun expressed concern over the incidents, which resulted in the deaths of dozens, including children. He attributed the tragedies to poor planning and negligence during the distribution of relief materials and palliatives.
Call for Accountability and Safety Measures
The IGP directed commissioners of police in the affected states to conduct thorough investigations into the events, promising legal action against any individuals or organizations found culpable.
“The lack of a well-defined plan for distributing palliatives in the country has led to chaos, unnecessary confrontations, and tragic loss of lives,” the statement read.
Egbetokun emphasized that negligence by event organizers is a criminal offense under Nigerian law, citing Section 196 of the Penal Code and Section 344 of the Criminal Code. He urged organizers to ensure the involvement of security agencies in such events to prevent similar tragedies.
Appeal for Collaborative Solutions
The IGP called on government officials, community leaders, and NGOs to work together in establishing an organized and safe framework for palliative distribution.
“Organizers must prioritize safety and avoid negligence, which will no longer be tolerated. The public is also advised to exercise caution and prioritize their safety when participating in such distributions,” Egbetokun added.
