ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Nigerian Army has arrested a soldier previously declared wanted over allegations of supplying military uniforms and other official accoutrements to terrorist groups, in what security authorities have described as a significant breakthrough in efforts to combat insider threats within the nation’s security architecture.
The suspect, identified as Private Mohammed Yusuf, was apprehended while he was allegedly attempting to escape across Nigeria’s eastern border into neighbouring Cameroon after evading security operatives for several days.
Military sources disclosed that the suspect had earlier been declared wanted following intelligence reports linking him to the unlawful diversion and sale of military uniforms and operational equipment believed to have found their way into the hands of terrorist and criminal elements. Authorities believe such activities pose serious risks to national security by enabling criminals to impersonate security personnel and carry out attacks under false identities.
The arrest followed coordinated intelligence-led operations by military personnel, culminating in his interception before he could allegedly cross into Cameroon.
Security analysts have repeatedly warned that the proliferation of military uniforms among non-state actors has complicated counter-insurgency operations across parts of the country, making it increasingly difficult for civilians to distinguish genuine security operatives from criminal groups during attacks.
The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out misconduct within its ranks, stressing that personnel found engaging in activities capable of undermining military operations or national security will face the full weight of military and civil laws.
Defence observers say the latest arrest demonstrates the military’s resolve to strengthen internal accountability while intensifying efforts to dismantle criminal networks supporting terrorism and insurgency.
The suspect is expected to face a comprehensive investigation, after which appropriate legal and military disciplinary procedures will be initiated in accordance with applicable laws.
The Army has also urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with credible intelligence capable of preventing acts of terrorism, arms trafficking, and other threats to national security.
