President Bola Tinubu has intervened in the leadership crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly, endorsing Mudashiru Obasa to continue as Speaker, thereby overriding earlier recommendations from a mediation panel.
On January 13, 2025, Obasa was impeached by 35 out of 40 lawmakers on allegations of high-handedness and financial misappropriation. Mojisola Meranda was subsequently appointed as Speaker.
A panel led by former Osun State Governor Bisi Akande and former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel recommended that Obasa be reinstated temporarily and then step down to allow for a new Speaker from Lagos West, aiming to balance the state’s political structure. Following this, Meranda resigned on March 3, 2025, reverting to her role as Deputy Speaker, and Obasa was reinstated.
On March 12, 2025, President Tinubu met with all 40 Lagos State lawmakers at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. During the closed-door session, he urged the legislators to collaborate with Obasa to ensure stability within the Assembly and the state. This decision effectively nullified the panel’s earlier recommendation for Obasa’s resignation.
With President Tinubu’s backing, Obasa’s position as Speaker is now secure, and the lawmakers have agreed to work harmoniously under his leadership. This intervention aims to restore normalcy and focus on legislative responsibilities in Lagos State.
President Tinubu’s decisive action underscores his commitment to maintaining political stability in Lagos State, ensuring that the legislative arm functions effectively for the benefit of its citizens.
