Published:

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will embark on a significant working visit to Lagos starting Tuesday, May 27, 2025, where he is scheduled to inaugurate critical national infrastructure and lead high-level commemorative events marking the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which he currently chairs.

Infrastructural Milestones: Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and More

A major highlight of President Tinubu’s visit will be the formal inauguration of Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway on Saturday, May 31. This landmark project, a centerpiece of his administration’s infrastructure drive, is envisioned to enhance economic integration and regional connectivity across southern Nigeria.

Accompanying the launch of this strategic highway are several other key infrastructure developments, including:

  • The Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road, a critical logistics corridor supporting Nigeria’s growing maritime sector.

  • The flag-off of Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, extending the project’s reach and reinforcing its economic significance.

  • The inauguration of the 7th Axial Road, part of a broader network aimed at decongesting traffic and boosting urban mobility.

Virtual Commissioning of Road Projects Across Northern Nigeria

In addition to physical inaugurations in Lagos, President Tinubu will also commission, via virtual means, several completed road projects spanning Northern Nigeria. These include:

  • Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II Road

  • Yakasai-Zalli Road

  • Kano Northern By-pass

  • Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I

  • Dabai-Kafur-Malumfashi Road

  • Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III

These projects underscore the administration’s commitment to delivering transformative infrastructure across all geopolitical zones.

ECOWAS 50th Anniversary Commemorations in Lagos

While in Lagos, President Tinubu will also preside over a series of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS, a regional bloc founded in 1975 to foster economic and political cooperation among West African nations.

Having kicked off in Accra, Ghana in April, the golden jubilee celebrations will continue in Lagos with a blend of symbolic and scholarly engagements. Key events include:

  • A reenactment of the 1975 founding declaration at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island.

  • A keynote address by President Tinubu at Eko Hotels and Suites, where he will outline ECOWAS’s historical milestones, current challenges, and future aspirations.

Joining the President at the event will be:

  • General Yakubu Gowon (Retired), Nigeria’s former Head of State and the only surviving signatory of the original 1975 ECOWAS declaration, who will deliver a commemorative speech.

  • Dr. Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, who will present the welcome address.

  • Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, former Minister of External Affairs, who will anchor a historical review of ECOWAS’s five-decade journey, followed by a panel discussion featuring regional policy experts and scholars.

Conclusion of Visit and Eid-el-Kabir Observance

President Tinubu is also expected to observe Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House Mosque located in Dodan Barracks, Ikoyi, before returning to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

This multi-faceted visit reflects the President’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure development, regional diplomacy, and national unity.
